The Popcorn Lab
Q: how does storage temperature affect
the popping rate of popcorn kernels?
Hypothesis: I predict that if the bags are
stored in cold temperatures they will have more “dead” kernels this is because these
kernels will be frozen and so they will be unable to open when popped
Procedures:
1.
Label two bags of popcorn “freezer”
2.
Place “freezer” bags in the freezer
3.
Put one thermometer on top of the
bags
4.
Label two more bags “cold” and put
those in the fridge
5.
Put thermometer on top of “cold” bags
6.
Label another two bags “heat”
7.
Place these bags in a small room with
a portable heater
8.
Turn heater on to lowest setting make
sure no one messes with the dial afterwards
9.
Label the last bag “control” and
place it in a room at room temperature
10. Leave bags where they are for one week
11. After one week take all the bags out
12. Pop popcorn
13. Eat popcorn
14. Record how many unpoped kernels are in each bag
